Team GB Invictus 2018 Swim Team
Early in 2018 I learnt that a swimming club pupil I used to coach many years ago had qualified for the 2018 Invictus games to be held in Sydney Australia. I contacted Richard and asked if I could help in any way. He said yes and the coaching journey to Sydney began.
During the year there were several Invictus swimming training camps held. I was asked if I would attend one in north London to video all of the swimmers and give a stroke analysis on their swimming. And so I set off to meet the squad.
Like all teachers and coaches it is always satisfying to assist swimmers on their path to competition. I was met by a very friendly group of people who have overcome and still live with many problems whilst serving in the forces. Although they strive as a Invictus group to adapt and over come.
This was a fantastic opportunity and experience for me as a coach to be able to take part in and assist the athletes. The swimmers were of high quality, very motivated, very quick in implementing new stroke changes and made me think well outside of the normal stroke technique teaching "box" for what was required by each swimmer and his/her physical & mental requirements.
At the games in October the team were very successful in gaining many medals in all events. Richard won a bronze and silver.
For myself I would always be available to help again if called upon.
